Teddy - Oct 1998

We shudder to think how limited his life will be in his country with his special need if he doesn't
get adopted in time. Our staff decribed him as a very sweet boy. He is an outgoing boy who was not too shy when talking with us. He attends school outside the orphanage and is in the 2nd grade. Because he has grown up in the orphanage, the orphanage started him in school at a much later age than he would have started had he grown up in a family, but they report that he is quite smart.
He's a very good student and above average. His favorite subject is math. He enjoys playing when outside of school especially with a ball. He has many friends of all ages. He's very active and likes to run. He says that some of his favorite things are snacks and new clothes. He says that nothing makes him sad. When he sees an injustice for himself or others, he tells the teachers. His caregivers report that he is a hearty eater. He was very polite and always smiled at us when he saw us walk by during our visit at the institute.

Teddy is on the shared list, but there is a $4,200 Promise Child grant for eligible families if the family chooses to use WACAP for his adoption.

Urgent: Nathan - 8/98

Nathan is in danger of “aging out.” This means that he will soon turn 14 years old, at which time he will no longer be eligible to be adopted. Since his birthday is in the middle of August, his adoptive family must have their homestudy completed for his adoption by the middle of April.

Nathan is considered a healthy child although some of his hepatitis B tests came back positive and were requested to be retested. He was admitted to the orphanage at the age of 3 and 1/2 years old, soon after began living with a foster family with whom he still resides, and began school at an early age. His report from 2011 indicates that he has normal cognitive and motor development, but his grades are a bit below average due to a lack of enthusiasm for school. He does, however, mostly enjoy history and gym classes and gets along with friends and classmates.

He is described as gentle, active, extroverted, and he looks after his younger foster brothers and sisters at home as well as other children at the orphanage. Enjoying chess, cards, and basketball, he also likes to surf the Internet, and he helps his foster mom with chores around the house. If you are interested in adopting Nathan, but have not yet started your homestudy, you can still have time to complete it!

Oliver is in 7th grade in the special education school where English is his favorite subject. His caregiver reports he has a difficult time focusing, but it may be because it seems he has some difficulty hearing. Oliver continually asked for questions to be repeated and watched the lips of the person talking.

His caregiver said his hearing is normal and that he was just nervous, but he said he sometimes can’t hear what is being said. He has not had speech therapy, but Oliver will likely need it due to his post operative cleft lip and palate. He likes watching TV. He enjoys reading comic books, and Batman is his favorite superhero. His favorite sport is basketball and Oliver loves a hamburger.

There is up to $9500 in financial aid available (including a $4200 Promise Child grant for eligible families for this adoption and the possibility of up to $5300 in fee waivers).

Kirk - 05/1998

Kirk is a healthy little boy who turns 14 years old in late May. Sadly, his mother died when he was a year old, and his father died when he was 11 years old. He has been living at the orphanage since that time. He adapted to his new environment quickly and is liked by all the teachers and kids. A polite and kind child, he works hard and shows respect to others. He enjoys watching cartoons and playing with balls. Kirk is described as smart, active, and generous. He has agreed to be adopted by a foreign family and hopes to grow up happy and give back to society. Perhaps your family can help Kirk achieve his dreams. There is a generous donation of $5,000 from an anonymous donor who has a heart for older children. This donation applies regardless of the family’s income level and is in addition to the $4,200 Promise Child grant that WACAP has available for each of these children for families who qualify based on income.

Meika - 05/1998

Mieka will turn 14 years old at the beginning of May; is a carrier of a  blood disorder. Abandoned at the age of 6, he has been living at the orphanage since then. Mieka is described as a curious child who continually asks his teachers and caregivers questions in order to understand as much as possible. He is fond of studying and likes to write and draw. He particularly likes playing with robots and playing outdoors, but he also enjoys watching cartoons on TV or reading books. He has a good appetite and gets along with other children. The caregivers like Mieka a great deal, call him a lovely child, and hope that he can find a family as quickly as possible.  A generous donation of $5,000 from an anonymous donor who has a heart for older children. This donation applies regardless of the family’s income level and is in addition to the $4,200 Promise Child grant that WACAP has available for each of these children for families who qualify based on income.In addition to the $5,000 donation and $4,200 Promise Child grant, the orphanage might be willing to reduce the orphanage donation approximately $2,700.

Logan - 04/1998

Logan will turn 14 years old in late April. He was found when he was 3 years old and started living at the orphanage, where he grew and developed over the years. Now he is in an age-appropriate grade in school. He receives average grades and learns math more easily than other subjects; he’s also been learning some simple English. His teachers say that his learning abilities are strong and he’s careful with his work. When Logan was 5 years old, he had heart surgery to correct his condition, and now he can run and play sports freely. He loves to read comic books and can draw very detailed pictures of the characters in the books. He has a few close friends at the orphanage with whom he plays and talks. Logan is described as optimistic, friendly, gregarious, and smart. We hope that we can find his forever family before it’s too late.  There is a generous donation of $5,000 from an anonymous donor who has a heart for older children. This donation applies regardless of the family’s income level and is in addition to the $4,200 Promise Child grant that WACAP has available for each of these children for families who qualify based on income.In addition to the $5,000 donation and $4,200 promise child grant, the orphanage might be willing to reduce the orphanage donation.

URGENT: Michelle - 4/1998

Michelle is 13 and she will turn 14 in April! Michelle is active, kind and loving. She likes to dress other children, help the caretaker to distribute candies and learn to sing children's songs and simple dances with other children. In watching TV, she can concentrate on it and can remember some new songs. She has good memory and can sing after learning for a few times. She is a very smart and lovely girl.

URGENT: Lilly - 3/1998

Lilly is 13 and will turn 14 in March! She is a slightly quiet and introverted child. She likes to watch TV at home, also likes to help mom do housework. She can just do addition and subtraction with numerals 1-10, can not do multiplication and division. She can count numerals from 1 to 50 and count to 100 reluctantly with reminding of the adult. Her vocabulary is rich, and she had no difficulty communicating with others. Through her special education class, she has made progress. She can read and write simple Chinese characters, words and sentences, and can also write her own name. Her caregivers hope that through continued studying in the future, she could make more progress in all areas.

Kolina - 12/2002

While this precious child may not be in danger of legally aging out of international adoption, her time is probably very short for her to find a family.  You see, she is in a situation physically where her life expectancy is most likely very short if she remains in the orphanage.  That is why I chose to highlight Kolina today. 

This sweet little girl is literally deteriorating daily in a crib in Eastern Europe.  On December 16 she will "celebrate" her birthday.  Kolina will be nine years old. Yes, nine! She has Down syndrome. Looking at her pictures, she probably only weighs around 10-12 pounds.  If that.  Clothes cover her clearly skeletal legs, and her pitiful frame is nothing but skin and bones.  Poor little darling.

Time is obviously crucial and she needs to come home as quickly as possible. Poor lovie is living on borrowed time--she is severely malnourished. URGENT - Shannon 2/98

Shannon is 13, in the 7th grade, is smart and does well in school. She likes to take walks and jump rope, and she lives in Guangxi. She has mild cerebral palsy (a slight limp and some weakness in one hand). She has been pleading for a family to adopt her, and her orphanage has finally decided to give her a shot, and is rushing to prepare her adoption papers! She needs a committed family to step up NOW to adopt her by Feb 27th! A family with LID can do it!

URGENT - Marshall - 2/98

This handsome young man is in need of his forever family. He came into care in May 1998 and has lived with two different foster families until 2010 when he was transferred back to an institution. He has club feet and stiff knee joints that make it difficult for him to walk. He has had two surgeries to help correct his club feet and one surgery to help improve the mobility of his knees. He has also been hospitalized in 2005 and 2009 for bone tuberculosis. He is able to walk with crutches or the assistance of others. Due to his difficulty in mobility, he was unable to attend formal school. His foster mother was able to find a tutor for him and he was able to learn addition, subtraction and writing. It is reported that he has some difficulty learning. It is reported that he is very close with his foster mother and still speaks with her on the phone even after being transferred back to the institution. He is in need of a family who is comfortable with his special needs.

Update - Zeke 03/1998

Yesterday Zeke came to my house and I was reminded of what an amazing little guy he is.  He is such a little gentleman, helping to clear the table, serving everyone food, saying Thank You, etc...  He loves to talk and had a lot of catching up to do after our long time away in America--he kept us laughing.  I talked with him about being adopted and what that would mean--leaving his birth country and the only home he's ever known.  He said that he understood that, but still really wanted a family. 

 

Last week some of the other kids teased him (in front of me but thinking I didn't hear) about how he was running out of time and no one would want him before his next birthday.  He just listened in silence.  He is fully aware that he only has a little time left.  Oh, I pray that someone comes forward soon.  There is still plenty of time, even starting from scratch (if someone moved really quickly).  He will be such a blessing.  

 

I would also feel confident bringing him in with smaller children.  He would be a wonderful big brother.  He takes good care of my younger girls, making sure they are always with the group, have enough food at the table, etc...  

 

We played lots of birthday games yesterday and he had a blast--laughing, dancing, etc...  He especially liked learning "The Chicken Dance" and balloon popping relay.  I hated to bring him back last night. This little guy really needs someone to love him and give him the home that he deserves.

Olga - 12/2007

URGENT: Hillary - 2/1998

Hillary gets along well with her classmates, knows to share her pencil with others who does not have. She knows to sweep the floor actively. Once, the caretaker gets ill, and tells Hillary she wants to go home and resign from the institute. Hillary hold her hands and says “please don’t leave, please pass the disease to me, I want to get ill instead of you”. And then she cries. She does not sleep for the whole night, and stays beside the caretaker. She is a sensitive girl, knows to greet the staff in the institute. She is introverted, quiet, shy, and not talkative in front of strangers, but would give you a sweet smile. She likes to play games with children at her age, is fond of rope skipping and kicking shuttlecock. Hillary has oval face, a pair of bright and large eyes, thick and black hair. She is thin, and is a sensitive girl.

Hillary is on the shared list but is being advocated for by Madison. Her file states that she has "mental nerve development delay." It sounds like she had TB at some point, and they are saying that caused her mental delay. The information in her file does not appear to support this diagnosis.  She also has polydactyly of one hand I think.

URGENT - Darien - 01/1998

Darien is beloved by his teachers and always willing to help. He is well liked by his classmates, too. He is active and happy and loves sports. He participates in sports meets and won the championship, earning a cute nickname. He considers the institute his family currently, but sees other children get adopted and fostered and says that he wants a mother and father of his own. When asked if he wants to be adopted, he happily agrees. Darien needs a family that is close to dossier ready who would like to pursue him.

Darien is on ASIA's designated list with a $5,000 grant available for his adoption. Marci said she would transfer his file to another agency if he had a family who wanted to pursue him, though the grant would not follow him!

URGENT - Geoff - 03/1998

Geoff ages out next March. Someone would need to start very very soon to adopt him before he turns 14. He is a precious boy and has partial hearing loss. Please don't let the fact that he's a boy and 13
